Activist Ronnie Agaba Jr. Held in Custody: A Fight for Justice

On the 14th of March, the corridors of Parliament echoed with the bold message emblazoned on posters held by activist Ronnie Agaba Jr. His call was clear: “Anita Among, stop stealing from Ugandans and scapegoating the gays.” It was a stark reminder of the injustices plaguing the nation and a plea for accountability from those in power.

Yet, Ronnie’s courageous act of peaceful protest was met with brutality and repression. Yesterday, news emerged that Ronnie had been detained at the Central Police Station (CPS), his spirit bruised but unbroken. Reports indicate that he bore the physical scars of torture, a chilling testament to the lengths authorities will go to silence dissent.

Despite the ordeal, Ronnie’s resolve remains unwavering. From behind bars, he continues to call for the resignation of Anita Among and demand justice for the corruption rampant within Parliament’s hallowed halls.

However, the price of speaking truth to power has been steep for Ronnie. He now finds himself remanded to Luzira prison until the 4th of April, facing charges of incitement of violence. His only crime? Exercising his fundamental right to peaceful protest and shining a light on the embezzlement plaguing our nation’s leadership.

As we stand in solidarity with Ronnie Agaba Jr., we are reminded of the sacrifices made by countless activists in the fight for justice and accountability. Their courage in the face of adversity inspires us all to continue the struggle for a more just and equitable society.

The detention of Ronnie Agaba Jr. serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to uphold the principles of democracy and protect the rights of all citizens. Let us raise our voices in support of Ronnie and all those who dare to speak truth to power, for their struggle is our struggle, and their cause is just.
